Hiding items in preview pop-up buttons

Hello,

I have a question about pop-up buttons.
Is it really so that you cannot hide items inside pop-up buttons other than control surface?

I would like to have only couple of layers selectable for each preview window, and through that I would like to control my other windows including the media bin. My setup is already cluttered so having a control surface shown for that wouldn't be an option. Of course I could do it with midi controller but when I'm setting stuff up with only laptop and without even a mouse it seems really hard to find things quickly.

And if this is really not doable, what would be the best way to approach this? I've been trying to get tab changes, or changing media bin layer to send midi or OSC but cannot get it to work either.
