When I route Ableton Live through VDMX (via Soundflower) with Play Thru sound the volume is noticeably lower than when I route Ableton directly to my laptop's output. So my question is, is the sound being degraded or just the volume being turned down? (Technically, I believe, even if it's just the volume, then it is still actually being slightly degraded.)
Hm, my guess for this is that like when using the built-in speaker for output from your system, SoundFlower also has its own 'volume' level that can be adjusted – essentially SF is just a virtual system audio device.
Unfortunately one confusing detail about the macOS is that the volume level for a device unless it is selected as the system device via the Sound System Preference. If you go to there, choose SF as the output device, then adjust the output level, you should be able to bring this up to a nominal level so that you don't get a drop in the sound level between apps.
Also note that once you've adjusted the volume level for SF in the system preferences, you can switch the device back to whatever you normally use and the volume level for SF will stay the same.
Hope that helps, and of course let us know if you are still having issues!
