Is it possible to import and animate stl files/3d content in vdmx. Or is there a process for tapping them from an external source. Curious if anyone has experience or suggestions. Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.
Currently VDMX does not have any native support for working with 3D objects, but there are a few routes you can go...
The first is to use something like Quartz Composer or Vuo to create a wrapper around your objects. This would allow you to work with them at a code level so that you can apply shaders and customize what published controls are accessible from VDMX. (You could also create QC / Vuo compositions that themselves can take a filepath to an object to load in)
The other route would be to use an app designed for working with 3D objects and either publish the output using Syphon, or using the Window Capture option in VDMX to grab the output directly (this method is slower but works in a pinch).
Along these lines, I know someone who has made a little OpenFrameworks app that loads a 3D scene, moves along a rail, receives OSC messages for adjusting parameters, then publishes it out to use in VDMX... you can maybe ping him on github, might be open source? https://github.com/danzeeeman
Hope those are some good leads to get started with!
