Programming DMX light show to movie assets

Hi - I haven't bought DMX hardware yet, but hope to program a light show to several assets for a rock band. I'm outputting to two screens - one for the audience and a lyric screen for the musicians. I'm stuck on how to pre-program the light show. I want to use a timeline to hit certain lights on the right beats. Do I use a plugin for this? Do I use MIDI?
