I stumbled upon this article again and thought I'd contribute with an update. This has become insanely easy and cheap over the last few years (I should have posted an update to this article 2 years ago).
Capture boxes out of China ignore/trick HDCP (which is awesome). They run less than $200 and can record onto USB thumb drives for hours on end. I've tested two of them and both worked perfectly (and still do for the last 2 years) once I worked out the proper procedure for recording.

https://www.cloner-alliance.com/[/url] is one of these companies. I have had their original cloner box for the last 2 years and I have tested a (knock-off from eBay) of their Evolve box. Basically, these things just work and don't cost a small fortune or require additional PC power. You can even power the newer ones off of mini-usb.
Even these "knock off's" on eBay work:https://www.ebay.com/itm/YK940-UHD-Capture-Box-Video-Recorder-Decode-For-PC-PS-XBox-DVD-OTT-4K-2K-HDMI/222623682022?hash=item33d567cde6:g:5~MAAOSwoR9aErxT
Cloner Alliance takes the same tech, but they re-brand it and update the firmware which can also be a good thing. The evolve knock off that I have actually accepted the Cloner Alliance firmware update.
There are also newer ways to capture uncompressed or 4:2:2 Mov's, but these work great for almost any purpose.
Hope this helps you,
