So i need to get a new laptop, but unfortunately the macbook pro i want is 2500 dollars without applecare. I can get an even better (specwise) dell for 1300. I wouldn't even be thinking about the MBP if it wasn't for vdmx, so i have to ask, has anyone used vdmx or other quartz composer applications on a hackintosh? Does advanced stuff like that work yet?
I use a hackintosh - but it's not a laptop, it's a rackmount "MacPro." It's got a core2quad and a 1 GB VRAM GPU. Downside: It doesn't run 10.6.6, I'm stuck at 10.6.4. But it is a beast when it comes to performance, I recently ran VDMX and Motion at the same time without any hickups (I realised on location that I needed some text clips...)
Have you considered building a small form-factor hackintosh instead of buying a laptop?
