advice from seasoned VDMX users

Hi

I am not sure if these posts are getting through or not. If I've breached some protocol, I apologize.

I am relatively new to VDMX and planning several projects with it (installation and live art performances). VDMX seems to be eating up a HUGE amount of processing power. I am wondering what set ups most people are using. I've converted most of my footage to HAP and I maybe use 2 - 3 effects on the layers. Still it just overburdens my processors:

I am running a 2015 macbook pro 15" retina with 16 G of Ram. AMD Radeon R9 and Intel Iris Pro Graphic cards. IOS is 10.12.6

I also run a Matrox Dual Head DP edition (occasionally)

Any suggestions for external peripherals or additions that I should be considering?
