Hi All
I am so glad to have this list to discuss VDMX issues. I have used VDMX versions 2 and 3 in performance (it went very smoothly, never a crash during a show), and I have an upcoming show where I will be using VDMX 4 under OSX for the first time.
I have a few questions related to my particular set-up (ti Book 1000 mZ, 1000 mB ram, OSX 10.3.3 (falk mini-installation), VDMX 4.1 (latest beta)).
For my particular set-up I am using 1 live DVCAM camera through a DFG1394-1 box and using it as a live input to both busses A and B and running different effects and mixing between the two. Bus B always includes time delay. All other efx are variable. I am also using 1 movie player module as a source for the luma bus for occasional luma keying. I am using a live audio source to drive the AFO module.
My concerns all have to do with getting the most out of the software, i.e., most effects, controllers, etc. without slowing down or freezing. I have done a lot of fiddling, but there are a few things I don’t understand.
1. In live set-up I use 320 x 240 frame size, I have gone out of VDIG mode so that I could slow the frame rate down to 15fps. I couldn’t use 29.97 without major disfunction. What effect does checking the various check boxes (use QT interrupt, capture in overdrive/interrupt, etc. ) have? Do they have any effect at all in non-VDIG mode? I tried various combinations in VDIG mode and didn’t see any noticeable improvement.
2. To relieve the software of processing, I have closed the central preview window and am monitoring the mix through an external monitor which I am looping through to my hardware mixer. Is this a bad idea for any reason?
3. I use the AFO and the oscillators to drive many parameters. Am I taxing the system more by using more different oscillators than using less oscillators to drive more different efx? If an oscillator is running but not driving anything, will it help appreciably if I turn it off rather than not using it to drive something? Same for AFO?
4. Any other efficiency tips?
Thanks to anyone who has time to answer any of these.
