hey guys
I've currently got an installation work, Bracketed Clone Fold on display as part of Under the Gun, a new media exhibition currently running at the RMIT School of Art Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. The exhibition is open until this Friday, October 31, but I've got some video documentation of the work that I thought a few of you might like to see.

There's a basic technical description on the Vimeo page, but I'll go into a bit more detail here about how VDMX is running the show behind the scenes...
The DV cam is hooked up via firewire to VDMX as a Live Input. The Start/Stop recording button is linked to a step sequencer with two trigger points. Once it's captured, the clip is automatically placed in the media bin and another step sequencer triggers the Play Next Clip button.
The piece plays for 7 hours a day in the gallery, so to keep disk space free, an AppleScript runs in the background to delete the older clips from the hard drive. It also checks every few minutes to make sure VDMX is still running and start it up again if it's crashed.
After messing around with a stack of different options - beginning with Processing, then Isadora, then Applescript controlling VLC and QuickTime, this is by far the best. It's been rock solid running VDMX 7.0.7 and performance is much, much better than any other alternatives I tried, even though it's not really what VDMX was designed for.
If you're in Melbourne, come check it out, it's still up for a few days.
